Thermostat 88C (safety lead)

This is the original style 88C thermostat with the fail-safe lead pellets around the edge of the thermostat. On some Silver Shadow models there was no coolant gauge. The lead pellets were included in the thermostat design as a “fail safe”. If the car overheated and the thermostat failed or stuck shut then the lead would melt allowing some coolant through. Please note that these are built to the correct original drawings which allow a full minimum opening travel distance of 9.5mm - unlike other thermostats that we have seen in the marketplace.

We have become increasingly aware of engine problems being caused by engines running too hot. We feel that this is partly caused by the ethanol content of modern fuels but we are definitely seeing an increase in problems related to the bottom half of the engine overheating. As a result, alongside the 88C thermostat UE36600-BR, we have manufactured 
UE36600-BR-78 which is designed to open between 75-79C and to be fully open at 88C. As per the original thermostat these have been manufactured to include the fail-safe lead pellets, which are designed to melt if the engine gets too hot and allow coolant past the thermostat.
