Rolls-Royce Phantom V Landaulette RHD

Rolls-Royce Phantom V, 1960, RHD, 64019 miles. Finished in Black with a Bordeaux leather (front) and Beige leather (rear) interior. Glass division, occasional seats and footrests.

In the 1950s, the most prestigious Rolls-Royce model lines were the majestic Rolls-Royce Phantom IV, available only to heads of state and royal families, and the Silver Wraith with a long wheelbase chassis. In 1959 both models were succeeded by the 6,045 mm long Phantom V. Although the Phantom V chassis was still independent and suitable for bespoke bodies from the few remaining coachbuilders, the factory offered the car as a seven-passenger limousine with ‘standard’ coachwork by the in-house coachbuilder Park Ward (later Mulliner Park Ward). Each luxuriously equipped limousine was designed to provide maximum comfort for both owner and chauffeur.

The introduction of the Phantom V coincided with the launch of the 6230 V8 engine which from the same moment was the standard powerplant for the newly introduced Silver Cloud II. The Phantom V chassis was a much-lengthened en reinforced version of the Silver Cloud II chassis, with many chassis details similar to those of the Silver Cloud II and later the Silver Cloud III. The all-alloy 6,230cc V8 engine was mated to the smooth General Motors four-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission. The front suspension was independent thanks to wishbones and coil springs, while semi-elliptic leaf springs were used at the rear. The steering was power-assisted, as were the drum brakes. The notably stiff chassis and generously proportioned 3,683 mm wheelbase were perfectly suited to deliver the pinnacle of comfort.

The State landaulette by Park Ward was a variant of their design number 980, the standard seven-passenger limousine. Only five Phantom V State landaulettes were built by Park Ward.

The landaulette on offer by Brabo started its career as a standard seven-passenger limousine. The Park Ward bodied Phantom V on chassis 5AT72 was supplied new to the Governor of Northern Nigeria who took delivery in September 1960. A later restoration, commissioned by RR&B specialist Chelsea Workshop in the UK, saw the body converted into this landaulette on offer. The body colour was changed and the single headlamps were upgraded to the four-headlamp lighting arrangement that would suit the Phantom V model as a standard from 1962 onwards.

The gray upholstery was replaced with burgundy leather in the front and soft tan leather in the rear, and a burgundy landaulette top was added to the rear end of the cab. The standard Phantom V amenities for the rear passengers were significantly improved to meet the expectations of the modern business man. Behind the well figured veneer panels a television is stored, as well as a video player and a DVD player. If the rear passenger lacks time, he/she can continue the work on a laptop with a printer. For direct communication with the business partners a world telephone is available. For a drink during the business trip, the owner can use a personal bar with elegant drinking cups.

The car is in the current ownership since 2006, and spent many years on static display. Hence the superb condition of the paint, the upholstery, the wood and the attractive features. But before the car can be used for long journeys or frequent use, it would be wise to subject the car to a thorough inspection or a recommissioning. Especially the brakes need some attention. The odometer reads a mileage of only 59,000 miles.

With the technics brought to reliable standards, this car is a unique and highly desirable vehicle. With a chauffeur behind the wheel, assisted by a modern navigation system, the car will satisfy a modern business man/woman with high demands on the available equipment in the rear compartment, who desires to be driven in a really unique office, and with opportunities to invite business partners in an unusual car experience. Or if you want to be the owner of an ultimate landaulette, waving at bystanders who don’t know what they’re seeing, or picnicking in your own private car cabin, this is your chance to acquire a multi-functional, elegant and unique Rolls-Royce. Only 516 Phantom V’s were built, only 156 by Park Ward, only five State landaulettes left the factory, and only one Phantom V has the modern equipment and condition like the car on offer at Brabo. It is a great opportunity to acquire a custom rarity of considerable distinction. Accompanying documentation to this Phantom V landaulette includes some MOT test certificates, a copy of the original chassis cards, a copy of a few articles about the car, and a copy of the original invoice. At the moment the RHD car sports a Dutch registration.
