Rolls-Royce & Bentley (1980–2003)
Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit & Silver Spur (1980–1998)
The Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit and the extended Silver Spur marked a new era for Rolls-Royce. With their cleaner and more modern design, they replaced the iconic Silver Shadow series. Both models were equipped with the trusted 6.75L V8 engine (L410), paired with a 3-speed Hydramatic automatic gearbox (later replaced by the GM 4L80-E 4-speed automatic transmission). This powertrain provided unmatched luxury and driving comfort.
Technical Improvements:
- New monocoque body with improved torsional rigidity.
- Hydropneumatic suspension with self-levelling and gas spheres (accumulators) for optimal comfort.
- Hydraulic braking system (RR363) with advanced ABS (introduced mid-1980s).
- Improved climate control with electronic regulation.
- From the Silver Spirit III and Silver Spur III (1993): Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection, upgraded cylinder heads, and optimized ECUs.
Submodels:
- Silver Spirit I (1980–1989) – First generation, successor to the Silver Shadow, with carburetors.
- Silver Spirit II (1989–1993) – With ABS, Lucas injection systems, and improved suspension.
- Silver Spirit III (1993–1996) – Bosch Motronic injection, optimized engine, and subtle design updates.
- Silver Spirit IV (1996–1998) – Limited production, with luxurious upgrades.
- Silver Spur (1980–1998) – Long wheelbase (LWB limousine), popular as an executive car.
Rolls-Royce Corniche (1980–1996)
The Corniche convertible remained a symbol of ultimate elegance. Handcrafted bodywork, an electric soft-top mechanism, and the iconic 6.75L V8—either carbureted or fuel-injected—ensured a stylish open-air driving experience.
- Corniche III (1989–1993) and Corniche IV (1993–1996) featured modern injection systems, improved air conditioning, and ECU refinements.
Rolls-Royce Camargue (until 1986)
This exclusive coupé, designed by Pininfarina, remained in production until 1986. With its avant-garde design, electronically controlled climate system (unique for its time), and luxurious interior, the Camargue is among the most exclusive Rolls-Royces ever built.
Bentley Mulsanne (1980–1992)
The Bentley Mulsanne offered a sportier alternative to the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. Named after the famous Le Mans corner, it was equipped with the 6.75L V8 engine.
- Mulsanne Turbo (1982–1985): Turbocharged V8 with significantly enhanced performance.
- Mulsanne S (1987–1992): Sportier suspension, ZF power steering, and classic Bentley styling.
Bentley Turbo R (1985–1997)
The Bentley Turbo R became the defining Bentley of the 1980s and 1990s. With its 6.75L turbocharged V8, reinforced suspension, and sporty design, it revived Bentley’s performance heritage. The Bosch Motronic injection system and refined ECUs ensured strong, reliable performance.
Bentley Brooklands (1992–1998)
A luxurious limousine succeeding the Mulsanne. Equipped with the familiar V8 engine featuring electronic injection, and available as the Brooklands R with sportier suspension and handling.
Bentley Azure (1995–2003)
A breathtaking convertible designed by Pininfarina and based on the Bentley Continental R. With its fully electric roof mechanism, powerful turbocharged V8, and majestic presence, the Azure became a symbol of modern Bentley luxury.
Bentley Continental R & T (1991–2003)
The Continental R was the first Bentley since the 1960s to feature a unique body design, independent of Rolls-Royce. With its wide stance, distinctive bodywork, turbocharged 6.75L V8, and grand tourer character, it was the epitome of a modern sporting Bentley.
- Continental T: More powerful engine, shorter wheelbase for a sportier driving experience.
